THE BRIEF

Bants Lane was identified for an upgrade as part of West Northamptonshire’s Kier traffic signal improvement program. The project aimed to modernize the traffic signal system at the junction of Bants Lane and Chiltern Avenue, improving safety and traffic flow. The scope included reusing existing infrastructure where possible, installing new equipment, and minimizing disruption to the community.

Key project components involved jetting existing ducts, desilting access chambers, repositioning traffic signals, and installing new controller boxes, traffic equipment, ducting, and access chambers. The project was set to be completed within a four-week timeframe.

THE DELIVERY

The project commenced on July 22nd, following a two-week mobilization period that included preparation and approval of Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS). Excavation points were safely prepared using detailed utility information, ensuring safe digging practices.

To maintain public safety, the junction of Bants Lane and Chiltern Avenue was closed, with a diversion route and two-way traffic lights set up in accordance with Chapter 8 traffic management regulations. S&D employed innovative techniques, such as vacuum excavation and the NAL MULTIduct™ system, to enhance efficiency and minimize disruptions:

Vacuum Excavation: This method allows precise control when maintaining or repairing buried assets, using remote or manual arms to safely remove soil once utilities are marked.

  • Cost efficiency.

  • Reduced reinstatement costs.

  • Prevention of utility strikes.

  • Minimal traffic disruption.

  • Reduced manpower and equipment needs.

Lightweight Duct System: MULTIduct™️: A lightweight, preformed ducting system that increases installation speed and durability.

MULTIduct™️ is a preformed ducting system ideal for installations in carriageway crossings, bridges, and tunnels. Made from nitrogen-foamed high-density polyethylene, it features:

  • High crush resistance and load strength.

  • Compatibility with surface mounting and restricted depth applications.

  • Available in 2, 4, 6, and 9-way formations, MULTIduct™️ is equipped with accessories for easy connection to traditional ducting. It has been tested for road applications at varying depths and maximum load conditions.

The Bants Lane traffic signal upgrade was successfully completed within the planned four-week timeframe and adhered to the project’s budget. By utilizing vacuum excavation and the MULTIduct™ system, the project minimized traffic disruptions and reduced the risk of utility damage, leading to a more efficient installation process.

The upgraded traffic signals improved the functionality and safety of the junction, delivering long-term benefits for the community while exemplifying innovative construction practices in public infrastructure projects.
